Porsche Celebrates the 50th Anniversary of the 911

This year marks the 50th anniversary of the legendary Porsche 911. In honor of the momentous occasion, the car maker has numerous events in the months to come.

Starting March 7th, the Porsche Museum will have four special exhibitions, including an early-model 911 Turbo Coupe, 1981 911 Cabriolet concept, a 1997 911 GT1 and a Type 754 T7 which was a “milestone on the way to the 911 design. Later in the year, the Porsche Museum will host the official “50 years of the Porsche 911″ exhibition, from June 4th until September 29th.

Next a vintage 1967 Porsche 911 will be sent on a world tour, being showcased at various locations and events around the globe, including the Pebble Beach Concours d’Elegance and Goodwood Festival of Speed.

The 911 was originally launched at the 1963 IAA show in Frankfurt as the 901. Eventually it would be called the 911, due to a dispute with Peugeot. Up until today Porsche has sold 820’000 911s, making it the most successful sports car of all times.
