Could The Coronavirus Cancel The 2020 Tokyo Olympics?

The Coronavirus pandemic continues to cause panic all over the world. This catastrophe has been the reason that many events have been canceled as well as businesses taking hits as they’ve seen their profits shrink. The Associated Press reports that one major name in the growing list of cancellations is the 2020 Tokyo Olympic games, according to a longtime member of the games’ governing body, the International Olympic Committee (IOC).

Former champion swimmer and senior IOC member Dick Pound states that the games could very well be canceled if the risk of holding the games in Japan is too great. “You just don’t postpone something on the size and scale of the Olympics,” Pound explained. “There’s so many moving parts, so many countries and different seasons. … You can’t just say, `We’ll do it in October.’”

Pound gave fans and athletes a little hope as he stated that the IOC will wait for judgement from the United Nations’ World Health Organization to make a decision, “As far as we all know, you’re going to be in Tokyo,” said Pound. “All indications are at this stage that it will be business as usual. So keep focused on your sport and be sure that the IOC is not going to send you into a pandemic situation.”
