NIGO points to the 1968 film Planet of the Apes as a source of inspiration. Additionally, in speaking with CNN back in 2006, he commented that “it was meant to be sarcastic. The name ‘A Bathing Ape’ is short for a Japanese saying ‘a bathing ape in lukewarm water.’ It’s a reference to the young generation being spoiled, pampered and too complacent.” Thus, the name is a slight jab/critique on the laziness and opulence of the generation of youths who consumed his products.

NIGO, the founder of Japanese streetwear brand A Bathing Ape aka BAPE, has just announced his departure from the brand that he created. Back in February 2011 we reported that NIGO had sold 90% of the Bape brand to Hong Kong’s I.T. After almost 20 successful years in the business, NIGO said at the time that the business side of BAPE had not been taken care of properly and therefore resulted in some financial difficulties and eventually in the sale. NIGO says that he will be working as a freelance creator in many different fields going forward.
